The Bedfordshire Road Cycling Club has a hard-case dhb bike box for hire at a daily rate. Any BRCC member can book it on a first-come-first-served basis.

The box includes foam pieces to keep wheels apart from each other and the frame.  You may wish to use more of your own however.  It also includes a protective bag for the rear derailier mechanism.

The bike box weighs 7kg when empty.  Your bike will need to be dismantled; at least the wheels removed and pedals removed in order to get it in the box. Large bikes will need the handle bars and forks removing also.  Getting the bike and wheels in the box can take some time and experimentation, but it is possible, even for the largest of bikes.

Check the airline you are flying with for their bike-carrying policy.  Many insist on a hard box, charge an additional flat rate for the bike/box, plus an overweight fee if it is over 20 kg (for example).  Click the link below for your airline to read their bike-carry policy.

Remember to check that the box will fit into your hire car when you reach your destination airport.  If the back seat is full of passengers/luggage already, you will need a large estate car to fit the box in.

To book the bike box:

• determine which days you need the bike box.  Include the pick-up and return days (in most cases you will need to hire the box for an extra day before and after your travel days).
• Open the "Rates and Availability" (link at top or bottom of this page) and determine firstly whether the box is available for your chosen dates, and if so, calculate how much it will cost you, based on the published hire rates for your chosen dates.
• Contact Bill Cottrill to pay the hire fee.  You can pay the fee by cash, cheque (payable to Bedfordshire Road Cycling Club) or online via PayPal (on request, you will be sent a PayPal invoice).

The payment is fully refundable up to a month prior to your departure date.  If you need to cancel the booking less than a month prior to the departure date, the hire payment is forfeit.

If the bike box is already booked out when you want to hire it, or you need to book two boxes at the same time, please let us know (Bill Cottrill), as we are monitoring demand with a view to purchasing a second box if necessary.

IMPORTANT:  Following an incidence of late return of the bike box, which denied TWO other people the use of this service and caused much inconvenience, there will now be a £20 deposit payable upon hire of the box. This will be forfeit if the box is not returned promptly on the last day of your booking.  Additionally the hirer will be required to pay the current daily rate for each day that the box is not returned. 

Also, the bike box cannot be hired to anyone who has not entered an email address and phone number on their profile on this website.
