Tuesday Fun Rides Update
On the morning of Saturday 20th June six of our finest arrived at the gates to Millbrook Proving Ground for an eight o’clock start, signed in and were told that they’d be filming on the 21% gradient, however as Evo Magazine had the new Lamborghini out for testing, and Land Rover were doing a product demonstration for the British Army, then cyclist were not to be allowed to cycle to location or on the track at all. Disappointed, our riders lifted their bikes into the back of a van and were sped off to the film-crew base - an array of old buses, caravans, trailers, and a few luxury coaches. The riders were then chaperoned to an the crew bus and told to make themselves at home: “oh and help yourself to the catering truck”. Our stars duly stocked up on bacon butties and tea. It would be five hours until they were called to location, so the bacon butties were followed with tea and biscuits, and then sausages, followed by more tea and biscuits, etc.

Some time later our stars got their camera call, made themselves ready, piled their bikes into the back of a van, and held on tight while the driver raced (stomachs churning) around the adverse-cambering-roller-coaster-road that is the Alpine Circuit: where the BBC Television show 'Top Gear' recently filmed an HGV truck driving contest, and where Daniel Craig rolled his Aston Martin in the James Bond movie Casino Royale. The driver dropped our stars off half way up the 21% incline, if the journey to the hill hadn’t already convinced them that all that free food from the catering van wasn’t a good idea, then the great slope in of them front certainly did. Now we all know that Beds Road riders are a tough breed, so rest assured that our riders rose to the challenge, despite being asked to climb the hill several times from a standing start, with the added difficulty of having to clip into pedals on a 21% incline. Following this the last two riders went on to film at least six takes overtaking a car as it was pushed down the hill. So nothing too difficult really.

Who were the celebrities then? Well other than our own six already named, there was Fay Ripley famous for her roles in ‘Cold Feet’ and the recent remake of ‘The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin’, and Mark Addy who is most famous for his role in the Sheffield Blockbuster, ‘The Full Monty’.

All riders reported that they had a thoroughly enjoyable day, and that the celebrities were most pleasant and obliging when harassed for photographs. So our stars departed, delighted with their bounty for a tough day’s work(?), sure to be invested sensibly in inner tubes, race entry fees, and the 'carbon wheel savings plan' - as they say every little helps!
